State of Play: Decision making and accuracy key to England women’s success

With the Women’s Hockey World Cup just around the corner, England women’s Pro League fixtures carry greater importance to that of the men. So, how are England faring before their journey to Amstelveen?

England have looked aggressive and dangerous when they employ their high press. They are capable of putting teams under real pressure and stealing the ball in the opposition half. Once they gain possession the English then look to counterattack at pace.

This decision-making process seems a little one dimensional, as regularly when they win the ball they fly forward and far too often turnover their turnover. The players need to establish the situation and the numbers involved to ascertain whether to play forward or hold possession.
