EuroHockey 2023: England men outdone by Belgium firepower

Monchengladbach — On a day when Barry Middleton was honoured into the EuroHockey hall of fame and Belgium’s John-John Dohmen became the leading international caps holder, with a staggering 454 caps, it was also the wise, experienced heads of the Red Lions who summoned the resolve to fight back from 3-1 down to beat England 5-3 here.

No matter the score, Belgium are in tune with their game and still hold the better all round skills in their unit to not panic. Even if England were fine value for their 3-1 lead.

Before the Red Lions’ deadly third quarter onslaught, where they scored four times in 10 minutes thanks in part to three PC strikes, it had been about touch and stick skill as the scoreboard ticked over in a frenetic pace.
