With football fans eagerly awaiting the beginning of the 2023/24 domestic campaign, cricket fans are entertaining themselves with The Ashes, but for hockey enthusiasts, with the 2022/23 FIH Pro League season with Great Britain coming to a close back in June, supporters are now building their anticipation for the upcoming 2023 EuroHockey Championships.
Players have now reported to their respective countries, and both the England Men and Women’s Hockey Teams are now gearing up for the Monchengladbach, Germany held tournament which takes place in August.
The EuroHockey Championship presents countries with their initial chance to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It is anticipated that both the Men’s and Women’s teams will encounter fierce competition for the coveted positions at the Games. Meanwhile, betting sites have already started gearing up to cover this tournament. For hockey enthusiasts who enjoy a little wager on the sport, betting on hockey is always enticing. However, it is crucial to find a trustworthy bookmaker such as Betwinner, which supports most Hockey events and offers attractive promotions. To enhance your experience, you can use Sportytrader’s exclusive Betwinner promo code for July.
The Men’s side have already been drawn in Pool A and know they will face Austria, Belgium and Spain. Their campaign will begin against Belgium on August 20, with Austria coming next before they close out the Pool with Spain on August 23.
The Women’s side have been drawn in Pool B and will therefore face Germany, Ireland and Scotland in their competition. They open the tournament against Ireland on August 18, before then facing Germany two days later. They close out their Pool with a tie against Scotland on August 22.
Each side will naturally be aiming to finish in the top two positions in each of their Pool’s as that will ensure progression and a place in the Semi Final, and naturally the overall winners of the competition will directly progress through to the Paris 2024 Olympic tournament.
With players having now reported to their respective countries, both of England’s teams have now already begun working on their preparations for the EuroHockey Championships and they are currently at the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre working on their training.
Ahead of the Euros, both sides will also be participating in the 100th anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation International Tournament which takes place out in Terrassa, Spain between the dates of July 25 and 30. That competition should prove to be the perfect final preparation for each before they begin their initial Olympic bids.
The Women’s side will face India, South Africa and host nation Spain, whilst the Men’s side have been drawn against India, the Netherlands and also host nation Spain in the four nation tournament.
Streaming and broadcast details for the EuroHockey Championships are yet to be confirmed, as it was reported back in May that England Hockey were still in talks for a broadcast home for the 2023 Championship as BT Sport had already passed on the opportunity of screaming all of the games, like they did back in 2021, and are instead staying focused on the FIH Pro League until the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Fans will be hoping there will be a swift conclusion to any ongoing negotiations with the tournament now ever closer.
