Secret Coach: Fears, inconsistencies and ‘the hump’ in hockey

Let’s describe the hump. My version is that season-changing, programme-changing, tournament-changing event that’s difficult to achieve but the momentum you gain from it carries you the rest of the way.

My team can’t get over the hump. For some it might be a single event, for us it’s two. We can beat a top team in Game 1, but it’s stamping your mark on the second game and legitimising your team in the process. We can’t get over the hump.

Is it fear? Do we play Game 1 with nothing to lose and then choke on the fear of having to repeat it in the second?
