Secret Hockey Coach: Player ownership is best investment into your team

Have you ever set standards for your team? I listened to a few coaches this week from various sports that set arbitrary standards for their team and complained about their players not meeting them.

I wonder if you let the team set their own standards whether you would have a different outcome. With the team I coach, we have a set of standards that are player driven – some years ago, we met as a group and decided what we would look like.

The players took ownership of this, and we came up with a set of standards that they decided upon.

  1. How do the players from now, new, adopt the standards from 5 years ago? I’d have thought that would be the same as the coach just creating them themself?
