EuroHockey 2021: England women’s campaign goes to the wire

The fast-paced nature of the EuroHockey Championships was laid bare on Monday as England, sitting pretty atop Pool A in the morning after a fine opening win against Italy, suddenly saw their campaign venture to the wire as the sun set after a stilted defeat to Germany in Amstelveen.

Germany produced a polished, efficient performance for over three quarters of the game against England in a 2-0 win as Mark Hager’s side found themselves devoid of possession, attacking nous and composure at the Wagener Stadium. 

It means that nothing less than a win against Belgium will do on Wednesday following Sonja Zimmerman’s PC strike and a ripping forehand from Jette Fleschutz, one of the goals of the tournament thus far.
