Great Britain women secure Olympic qualifying last four berth with Malaysia rout

Valencia — Great Britain’s afternoon was 15 minutes away from becoming a nervy affair before even stepping foot on the pitch on Tuesday afternoon. With Canada beating hosts Spain 1-0 before the fourth quarter, three sides were looking set to finish on six points. As it was, Spain scored five before GB rattled in eight to progress to the FIH Olympic Hockey qualifying semi-finals.

Six second quarter goals ultimately set up this 8-1 rout against an inadequate Malaysia, a match occasionally akin to a training ground session once the defensive floodgates opened. Tess Howard, Giselle Ansley, playing her 100th cap, Hannah French all scored braces.
