Olympic hockey qualifiers: Spain beat GB women for first time since 1993

Valencia — The MC refrained from playing The Scorpions’ Wind of Change at the end of the first quarter here at a blustery Campo de Hockey. David Ralph’s side certainly need some fresh direction here after an outstanding solo goal from Patricia Alvarez handed Spain their first victory for 31 years against Great Britain women.

With nine minutes left, Alvarez latched onto a looping forward pass deep inside Great Britain’s 23m before dazzling 3D skills gave her space to beat Sabbie Heesh with a powerful forehand to end a nine-match losing streak against GB and put Carlos Garcia Cuenca’s side in the driving seat at these Olympic qualifiers.
