The FIH Pro League is back on the hockey calendar in the coming weeks and Great Britain Hockey have now announced both the men’s and women’s squads that will kick off this league campaign out in Argentina between the 6th and 11th of December.
This FIH mini tournament will see the GB sides take on host country Argentina and the Netherlands and for those who like a flutter, a bet365 bonus could help guide you for the odds on these matches.
The women’s team sees the return of Olympic winners Giselle Ansley, Anna Toman and Sarah Robertson. Katie Robertson has been called up and will be earning her first GB cap at the event.
The men’s side could also see debutants as Rohan Bhuhi and Struan Walker have been called into their squad, and Welshman Rupert Shipperley has been appointed as vice captain of the side for the first time.
Speaking about the selections and the upcoming games, women’s head coach David Ralph said: “I know the team is excited to get started in Argentina and we’re really pleased to be welcoming back Giselle, Anna and Sarah. Their experience is going to be great to have in the squad and I want to congratulate Katie on earning her first cap. Competing against the likes of Argentina and the Netherlands will be really important for us ahead of the start of 2024.”
Paul Revington, head coach of the men’s side, commented: “We’re all looking forward to getting started for the new international season. We face a tough schedule in Argentina with four matches in five days, however, this will provide us with a valuable test ahead of the Olympic Qualifier in Oman. We have several athletes who could make their Great Britain debuts in Argentina which is a testament to the quality of these individuals and to the hard work the entire squad continues to deliver both on and off the field.”
31 year old Shipperley as vice captain could be a good choice, and with 33 GB caps to his name, he knew it was a ‘great honour’.
“We have a great locker room and I hope I can continue to contribute both on the field and as one of the vice-captains.”
It is also a good recognition of his form, having scored on his debut, he has now taken his tally to six – including having scored at the Tokyo Olympics. Zach Wallace joins Shipperley as vice captain, with James Albery taking the full captain’s armband for the mini tournament.
Toman, Robertson and Ansley share the full captain’s role for the women’s side.
