“I just thought, ‘Oh my word, we actually did it.’ All my teammates just came running at me and I was knocked over.” In April 2022, goalkeeper Sofie ter Kuile and the Dutch U21 hockey team were celebrating victory in the Junior World Cup in South Africa, conceding a record one goal in the process.
This week the junior Oranje kicked-off their title defence in Santiago, Chile. Ter Kuile, once more, has been selected as first-choice goalkeeper and will hope to maintain the Dutch defensive form.
“Looking back, it is crazy that I only got one goal against. Hopefully this time it will be zero goals, but it will be way harder,” she laughs.
