EuroHockey 2023: England carve open Ireland to start in style

Monchengladbach — England women opened their bid to win a first EuroHockey medal for six years with a coasting 3-0 victory over Ireland. The Green Army, meanwhile, suffered their 11th straight defeat to England over a 39-year stretch courtesy of Grace Balsdon’s penalty stroke, a brilliant back-to-goal touch from Tess Howard and Hannah Martin’s back post poacher’s goal. 

For both teams, Germany lurk. England play the hosts on Sunday night, while the Irish, should they beat Scotland on Saturday, will need to beat the hosts in their final group game on Tuesday.
