‘Smokey’ lights England Hockey Masters success

When Lakbir ‘Smokey’ Atwal is asked whether he still expected to be playing at this age, his answer is a resolute ‘no’. Yet, Atwal has returned to UK shores after winning a European Championship in Valencia, with the title of top scorer to boot.

“This is probably the main highlight of my hockey career,” Atwal tells The Hockey Paper. “I actually won a gold medal at an international tournament.”

Atwal was a member of the triumphant England LX team at the Spirit of Masters over-65s European Championships. He finished the tournament on a total of five goals, adding his fifth in a convincing 2-0 win against the Netherlands in the final.
