“It’s a real peeve of mine,” New Zealand sporting star Sophie Devine once said, “seeing kids being told to pick a sport when they’re nine years old, and that links into other areas such as athlete burnout and drop-out rates at a time when they should simply be participating and having fun.”
Devine is a former Black Sticks hockey player turned White Ferns cricket ace and genuine all-rounder, one who was closing in on becoming only the fourth cricketer to reach 3,000 in women T20s.
Devine started her sporting pursuits with her brother and used a concrete roller to create a pitch on the lawn of their family home.
