Hockey India juniors win Sultan of Johor Cup over Australia

India’s under-21 side were gifted around £2,000 per player from Hockey India after winning the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia.

India beat Australia in a tense shoot-out, with defending champs Great Britain winning bronze over Japan.

The finalists were tied at 1-1 in normal time as India’s Sudeep Chirmako scored in the 14th minute before Jack Holland levelled before half-time.

It then took nine shoot-outs to decide the winner of the 10th title of the prestigious tournament.

At 4-4, sudden death saw Sudeep Chirmako hold his nerve and mand Joshua Brooks miss as India won their third Sultan of Johor Cup title.

Great Britain juniors finished third after beating Japan 3-1 in the bronze medal match.

GB narrowly missed out on a place in the final after two late PC goals from India in a dramatic 5-5 draw in their last pool game.

Scotland’s Jamie Golden finished as Britain’s top scorer, with four goals in six games.
