Viewpoint: Can FIH Hockey Pro League changes finally add gloss?

Multiple mini tournaments. Promotion and relegation. Olympic and World Cup direct qualification down the line. The official line is ‘evolution’ but, once again, it’s all change for the tinkering FIH Pro League ahead of Season 4 as hockey chiefs strive to make financial gains with its global league.

The October to July season kicked off on Friday with six games in nine days, with New Zealand, India and Spain playing each other in Bhubaneswar.

And this will be the make-up of the league moving forwards. Rather than teams travelling to play each other on a home and away basis, change has come in the form of three teams playing against each other in a mini Champions Trophy-style format.
