Women’s Hockey World Cup: ‘It’s always more than us when we produce big results’

Amsterdam — Phumelela Mbande, South Africa’s excellent goalkeeper, says the ball is rolling on more players of colour being recognised for the international side, but that it will take “long-term change” for it to take to effect.

Mbande, who also works as an audit manager at PWG, is a founding member of activist group Players for Transformation (PFT), which came to the fore in 2018 with a public show of support representing black hockey players.

The body took to social media lambasting the failure of SA hockey as it looked to address the fears of black athletes who cited a lack of opportunity.
