Hockey’s position as an 11-a-side sport at Los Angeles 2028 will be known in 2023 after Olympic chiefs outlined a set of six criteria for its review of the 28 disciplines ahead of the first Games in the US city since LA last hosted in 1984.
Hockey was included in the initial sports programme for the LA Games on Thursday, with skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing also featuring. Meanwhile, weightlifting, boxing and modern pentathlon were left off and will have to convince the International Olympic Committee of re-inclusion.
Hockey has been there before. But as far as it goes this time around, it remains to be seen how the make-up of the sport will be rubber-stamped for 2028.
