College field hockey in the United States has seen further record numbers of foreign students for the 2021/22 season.
With US colleges and scouts becoming prevalent in offering places for UK and European students, it has seen several juniors playing to a high standard travelling Stateside to take up scholarships in recent seasons. The likes of Germany’s Olympic captain Nike Lorenz have recently gone through the system.
And, according to statistics by Aspire USA, the sport scholarship service, there are now 422 athletes playing field hockey for this season. Around 20 years ago, there were 38 foreign athletes.
For 2021/22, Dutch students (135) lead the way, followed by England (60) and Germany (40). Canada and Argentina, both with 32 athletes, are followed by South Africa (21) and Belgium (20).
