Clubs bid for Big Stadium Hockey turf

England Hockey is looking to sell the innovative Big Stadium Hockey turf used for The Stoop fixtures in 2019 to a new home, writes Richard Bright.

The national governing body has opened an expression of interest period for clubs to apply for the ground-breaking carpet.

The Polytan Poligras Tokyo GT carpet is the surface that will be used at the Tokyo Olympics and the same as the Bisham Abbey surface where the GB squads train.

According to England Hockey, the plan was always to move the turf, which retails at over £160,000. An initial deal with a club had been in place but fell through.

England Hockey outlined that installation work would take place between April and August, or sooner for interested parties. Work would be undertaken by Polytan.

Although looking to shift its original turf, EH said that its pioneering stadium project would continue after the pandemic.

“Big Stadium project is very much on the agenda for future events,” an England Hockey spokesperson said.
