Ollie Payne rise is testament to goalkeepers thriving at Universities

Ollie Payne’s call up to the Great Britain Olympic squad follows a succession of goalkeepers to have progressed through elite university coaching pathways.

Payne is a product of Durham University and has since seen a meteoric rise to the England and GB men’s programme, which culminated last week with a first Olympic berth, aged 22.

“Durham University has a record of outstanding goakeeping development,” says Dave Miller, a long-time volunteer. “Along with the other Performance Universities competing in the England Hockey National League structure, goalkeepers really do benefit from the intense training that they can get from university setups.”
