Wales tell Euro hockey story with passion and determination

Luke Hawker admitted that Wales’ product of play on the pitch “told the story” of their superb – but nervy – EuroHockey Championships as they stayed in the A Division.

Wales needed to win by two goals against Ireland if they were to stave off relegation. Gareth Furling’s penalty corner double set them on their way, before Dale Hutchinson and Ben Francis added gloss after half-time to spark wild scenes at the hooter.

Cardiff & Met’s Hawker told The Hockey Paper: “We are a close-knit bunch. We have played a lot of hockey and a few of us joke that four years ago we were in Portugal and we have come through some tough challenges to be here. Hopefully that pride, work and commitment showed on the pitch and is telling the story.”
