Hollie Pearne-Webb on recovery path in bid to reach Paris 2024 Olympics

Hollie Pearne-Webb says she is on the “road to recovery” after stating that her domestic hockey season with Wimbledon women is over as she bids to get fit for the Olympic summer.

Pearne-Webb, the GB captain, had back surgery this month after experiencing “quite severe nerve pain” in her left glute and leg “due to a couple of prolapsed discs in my lower back.”

The 33-year-old led GB women to qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics and was notably emotional in her final two matches.

“For the vast majority of my career I have kept injuries quite private but I have decided to take a leap of faith and share a little about my current injury,” she said, which had started at the end of September.

This resulted in 3.5 months of rehab including several injections and physio. After just having made it back onto the pitch for the Olympic Qualifiers my pain hasn’t gone away and has deteriorated significantly. Unfortunately this left me with no other option but to operate to try and get back to living a normal life and playing hockey.”

She recently had a microdiscectomy and decompression procedure to her lower back.

“This is where they removed part of the discs and shaved bone off where they were compressing on my nerve,” she added.
