Hockey5s World Cup: Men’s event remains wide open affair

Muscat — Hosts Oman have a great chance of reaching the Hockey5s World Cup semi-finals on Tuesday — a men’s tournament which could end with a surprise inaugural winner.

Netherlands will play India in the opening last eight match at the Oman Hockey Centre. The Dutch will be favourites but had to be at their best to oust Nigera 8-6 in their final group game.

India racked up 30 goals from their three pool matches, including an 8-6 defeat to Egypt.

The Omanis have been pitted against Kenya in Tuesday morning’s last eight matches after they overcame the USA to progress from the group stages.

Oman will look to top scorer Khalid Al Shaaibi as their main threat, while Kenyan captain Ivan Ludiali, 23, has notched five goals.

Egypt and Poland also meet in what could be the tie of the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Trinidad & Tobago and Malaysia is the final quarter-final to take place.

The Trinidadians are led by Southgate’s Teague Marcano, who has scored 11 goals from three games so far.

Earlier this month, Marcano rattled in 31 goals from eight matches to lead Southgate to top spot in the Super 6s Indoor Championships Men’s Division One.
