FIH Olympic hockey qualifiers: Latest news, results, permutations

The latest news from Ranchi and Valencia with the final Paris 2024 Olympic tickets on offer

RANCHI – Women’s qualifying

Chile and Japan will slug it out for a place in the semi-finals. The Chileans beat Czech Republic 6-0, while Japan kept alive their hopes with a 1-1 draw against Germany, who top the standings.

Germany and Japan are level on four points – 14 penalty corners on the German side were not enough for their second victory – the latter needing a draw against Chile to qualify.

USA on a roll

The USA top pool B after two wins, including their slender 1-0 win over hosts India. On Sunday they beat Italy 2-0.

It will go down to the final game to see who qualifies, with New Zealand ahead of India on goal difference, despite going down 3-1 to the hosts.

India play Italy and will rely on goals and USA beating the Black Sticks. It remains delicately poised.

VALENCIA – MEN’S QUALIFYING

Austria need a point or more to put themselves within one match of qualifying for Paris 2024.

Josef Winkler, 20, has notched two goals for Austria, the latest coming in a 2-0 win over Egypt.

The Egyptians tussled with Korea in a thrilling 4-4 draw on the opening day. Meanwhile, Korea have kept themselves in the frame after coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Spain.

Nothing will be taken for granted in their final game against Egypt. Again, the final games will decide the make-up of the semi-finals.

The other pool featuring Belgium, Ireland, Japan and Ukraine got under way on Sunday.
