Irish hockey record caps holder Eugene Magee ends club career with win

Irish record caps holder Eugene Magee was given an emotional farewell as he played his last game for Banbridge at the weekend.

Players formed a tunnel for Magee, 37, and was cheered off on his home pitch after Banbridge won the men’s EuroHockey Trophy II competition.

The Irish outfit beat TJ Plzen- Litice 4-1 in the gold medal match as they won a sixth trophy of the season and were handed points allocated toward next season’s Euro Hockey League.

Magee racked up 295 caps for Ireland after making his debut against Belgium in Dublin in 2005.

He became the most capped player for the Green Machine in 2013, surpassing previous record holder Stephen Butler’s mark of 163 caps.

Magee, who also played for German side Krefeld, retired from international hockey in 2019.

It came less than two weeks after Ireland failed to make it to a second successive Olympic Games after a controversial loss to Canada.
