‘Crazy adventure’: Bangladesh’s first Hockey Champions Trophy finishes in controversy

Champions Trophy and franchise hockey has been played in 2022 – after Bangladesh entered a five-year agreement to run a franchise-based league.

Last month’s denouement ended in some controversy, too. Acme Chattogram clinched the inaugural title by defeating Monarch Padma 4-3 after a shoot-out. As time ticked down, a penalty stroke was given to Chattogram, overruled by the video umpire who deemed it a penalty corner.

This led to the Chattogram players – who had Dutchman Bjorn Kellerman in their ranks – leaving the field “for a few minutes” at Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium.
