Surbiton women’s coach on high after eighth England Hockey title in ‘intense’ season

Even with the title won, courtesy of Hampstead & Westminster slipping up earlier in the afternoon, there was an air of intensity surrounding Brett Garrard, Surbiton women’s coach, at the weekend.

Garrard was perched bankside at Saint Hill as Surbiton held on to beat East Grinstead 1-0 before the title celebrations could start, the team ushering in their eighth Championship in a row.

The GB Olympian and long-time Surbiton coach now tries to position himself up high when location allows. Yet, his stance was two-fold on Saturday. Garrard hadn’t been feeling 100 per cent after a bout of Covid. At this stage of the season, with the Euro Hockey League looming, he decided to keep his distance, less players picked up a cold or other.
