Nottingham and Exeter women claim BUCS Big Wednesday hockey titles

University of Nottingham women continued their stranglehold with a hat-tick of wins while Exeter University won a tight contest to claim the men’s title on BUCS Big Wednesday 2024.

In the ICG Women’s Hockey Championship Finals captain Maddie Axford led from the front as UoN beat University of Birmingham 2-0 at Loughborough University.

Axford scored in either half and nearly scored a third with the last backhand of the game before UoN won their third straight title.

The Durham v Exeter men’s finale was a thriller as the Devonians came from a goal down to claim victory.

Durham opened the scoring with a thunderous forehand from Freddie Britt.

Seconds later, Exeter equalised with a cute aerial into the D and lifted finish from Nick Nurse.

Exeter took the lead in the final quarter when Jonny Sturch-Hibbert shot on the turn.

In the Women’s Trophy, Edinburgh 2s beat Bournemouth 3-0, while Exeter 3s beat Durham on penalty flicks after a 1-1 scoreline.

The Men’s Trophy saw Exeter 3s again win on penalty flicks.

The Men’s Vase was won by Nottingham 2s with a 3-2 success over Exeter 2s. Newcastle beat Nottingham Trent 2-0 in the women’s final.
