Hockey shorts: A half-time marriage proposal

The Hockey Paper rounds up news from the top leagues to grass roots, on and off the pitch

At Didsbury HC this month, there was a “special weekend” at the L6s which saw co-captain Katie and their team manager Shamu get engaged at half time in their match away at Glossop.

“Of course she said yes!!! The L6s and the club are over the moon for them!” the club said.

The proposal, pictured above, clearly kick started their second-half and a sure fire way to bond a team.

The club added: “To top it off they beat Glossop (who are higher than them in the table) 3-1 and Katie scored a flick!! Best hockey weekend ever!!”

Alexander Hendrickx, regarded as the world’s best dragflicker, will play back in Belgium next season with La Gantoise after signing a four-year contract.

He will leave Pinoké after joining in 2018.

Tom Pilgrim, the young umpire we have profiled several times at The Hockey Paper, umpired his first National League match at the weekend.

He officiated the match between Bedford and Beeston 2 in the Women’s Conference Midlands.

“Stuff to work on, but amazed that aged 15 he was able to deliver a performance at this level,” said his dad, Matthew.

Congratulations Tom.

At the EuroHockey Indoor Club Cup, German powerhouse Düsseldorfer, below, beat Turkish hosts Gaziantep 11-3 in the final. Mabel Brands finished top scorer with 25 goals. Buckingham, who took the place of Repton as England’s representative, finished eighth after a last ditch 3-2 defeat to Swiss side RotWeiss Wettingen.

More umpiring news. This time to Stephen Cox, who retired from National League duties at the weekend.

He recently became just the third person to reach the milestone of 500 national league matches.

“Congratulations on this very special achievement Stephen, and thank you for your incredible contribution,” said the NPUA.

“A Romsey hockey club first!” the Hampshire club proclaimed.

The reason? Hannah Sainsbury and her two daughters played in the same squad when the women’s 1’s played away at Haslemere. “It was a 2-1 away defeat but this family was amazing on the pitch together!” the club added.

More multi-sport hockey talent
