‘Power of money’: Belgian player bemoans India hosting Hockey World Cup

Former Belgian player Elliot van Strydonck has said that it is “regrettable” that India is hosting successive Hockey World Cups for men, while Argentina’s coach was “surprised” at the 2023 edition heading to Bhubaneswar again.

Van Strydonck, who last played at Rio 2016, said that hosting the World Cup in India for three of the last four editions put other nations at a disadvantage, despite the Asian powerhouse failing to win gold.

  1. The question is if not India, then where? Is Belgium/Holland the proper choice? They will host the next world cups of both men and women in 2026. Holland hosted the women’s world cup last year. Is it fair for a country to host two world cups, one after another like Holland is doing?
