Hockey Social: France midfielder Timothée Clément

In our anything goes Q&A, we speak to players and coaches on topics ranging from temptations, influences, fashion sense and match teas. This time: Timothée Clément, who is a travelling reserve for the men’s World Cup

What was your earliest ambition? To become a champion and win the Olympics Games.

The event that altered the course of your life and character… To have played my first international competition (World Cup in India) at 18 years old.

You wouldn’t know it, but I’m very good at … Playing tennis and cooking meals.

The book that means the most to you? Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s autobiography.

The film you can watch time and time again is… Dikkenek! A hilarious Belgium movie.

What do you do to relax or get away from hockey?
Spend some time with my friends, play sport or PlayStation.

Do you have a job outside of hockey – tell us about it…
I’m currently studying physiotherapy in Paris. My school has been very accommodating as I live and play in Belgium during the hockey season.

What would be your priorities if you were FIH chief for a day?
I’d love to help promote hockey and make it more popular and well known.

The person who has influenced you most in hockey and why…
My dad has been a great influence on me. He remains one of the most capped French hockey players and had a great international career.

What has been your happiest moment?
Winning the bronze medal at the 2021 Junior World Cup. My younger brother was also playing.

What would you change about hockey for the better?
Organise more international competition for all nations and develop hockey in other countries.

What is your best coaching tip for aspiring players?
It is important to be able to train alone, outside of organised and structured training. You need to identify what you can improve and commit to do it.

The prized possession you value above all others?
I was awarded Most Valuable Player at the 2021 Junior World Cup.

What drives you on?
I’m striving for trophies and medals in prestigious international competitions.
