Great Britain men jostle for Paris Olympic cycle places

Spain men squared the uncapped three-match Andalucia Hockey Series against Great Britain on Friday with a 4-2 win.

GB men have been based in San Fernando since Jan 13 and face the final game on Saturday as the men’s programme sets its sights on finalising the squad for the Paris Olympic cycle, with interim coach Zak Jones leading the side.

There are plenty of new faces in the squad vying for full-time places, having impressed in trials at Bisham Abbey over the autumn.

The GB scorers were Liam Ansell and Gareth Furlong in Friday’s defeat. In the 4-0 victory over Spain on Wednesday night, David Goodfield, James Gall, Chris Griffiths and Peter Scott all scored. Griffiths looked particularly lively in that game.

Earlier in the week, Jip Janssen, the Kampong defender, scored all three in the Oranje’s 3-1 win over Spain, now coached by former Dutch coach Max Caldas.

England’s men return to Spain for their opening games of the 2021/22 FIH Hockey Pro League season on Feb 5-6.

GB men’s squad in Spain:

James Albery, David Ames, Liam Ansell, Nick Bandurak, Will Calnan, David Condon, Brendan Creed, Jacob Draper, Gareth Furlong, James Gall, David Goodfield, Chris Griffiths, Ed Horler, James Mazarelo (GK), James Oates, Nick Park, Matt Ramshaw, Stu Rushmere, Liam Sanford, Duncan Scott, Peter Scott, Rupert Shipperley, Ian Sloan. Rhys Smith, Tom Sorsby, Sam Taylor, Jack Turner, Zach Wallace, Jack Waller.
