Alan Forsyth’s goals give HGC perfect start to season

Alan Forsyth has started off his time on the continent in fine fettle by getting back to doing what he does best before the season has even started.

The Scot proved the difference over the weekend as his new side HGC – featuring Zach Wallace and Ollie Willars – beat Amsterdam 4-3 to win the ABN AMRO Cup.

Forsyth netted two minutes from the end to clinch the cup, following on from his hat-trick in the semi-final win over Oranje-Rood.

Trent Mitton had given Amsterdam a 2-0 lead. Kenta Tanaka got one back for Paul van Ass’s side before Brent van Bijnen extended the lead to 3-1.

Goals from Steijn van Heijningen and Canadian Gordon Johnston ensured that the teams entered the final quarter level.

The duel seemed to be heading for shoot-outs, but Forsyth gave HGC the victory and the tournament win, the Wassenaar club’s first success in the competition.

Bloemendaal finished third with a 2-1 win over Oranje-Rood while SV Kampong were 6-2 winners over Klein Zwitserland to finish in fifth.

Amsterdam won the women’s ABMN AMRO Cup in Rotterdam after beating HC Klein Zwitserland 1-0 in the final. Dutch Olympic gold medallist Maria Verschoor scored the winner.
