Great Britain forward Simon Mantell has been ruled out of the remainder of the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament – the Olympic Test Event – after fracturing the fifth metatarsal bone of his left foot.

The 28-year-old Reading player sustained the injury in the final minute of Great Britain’s 4-2 victory over India on Thursday evening. He was accidentally hit on the foot by the stick of an Indian player. Mantell had earlier scored Great Britain’s second goal of the game.

An x-ray on Thursday evening confirmed the injury. Mantell will see a specialist next week. No timescale has yet been put on his treatment and recovery.

Under the regulations of the tournament, Great Britain cannot call up another athlete and will compete with a squad of 17 for the remainder of the tournament.
