Is it time hockey clubs adopted ‘women’ instead of ‘ladies’?

As English women’s rugby grows commercially, so teams have seen name changes.

For instance, Harlequins Ladies are now Harlequins Women. The London club said the move, in 2019, brings the team in line with their identity and desire to achieve gender equality in the sport.

“We have great strong female role models who are ambassadors for the game and who are significantly contributing to inspiring the next generation of female players coming through,” Harlequins coach Karen Findlay said at the time of the rebrand. “It is therefore right that the name reflects that shared sense of purpose.”

  1. I don’t see much strength in the argument that change is required because some commercial organisations are doing a thing, especially when it is likely that the majority of those taking such decisions are men.

    The only thing that matters is that women in hockey decide what their own teams and clubs are called
