LONDON, 23 July – Facts and figures for hockey at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

  • 1,600,000 – pieces of scaffolding used to construct the Riverbank Arena.
  • 20,240 – litres of water (20.24m³) used in 11 minutes of pitch watering.
  • 16,000 – seating capacity at the Riverbank Arena.
  • 10,944 – 500ml water bottles provided for the teams during competition.
  • 737 – grams, the maximum weight permitted for a hockey stick.
  • 384 – players in the men’s and women’s competitions.
  • 145 – number of minutes it took Netherlands to beat Spain for fifth place at the Mexico City 1968 Olympic Games. Netherlands won 1-0 after various periods of extra-time.
  • 70 – minutes (2 x 35) in a standard hockey match.
  • 41 – years old, the age of Akemi KATO (JPN) – Olympic hockey’s oldest ever player.
  • 24 – goals scored by India against the USA at the Los Angeles 1932 Olympic Games. The 24-1 match score is Olympic hockey’s biggest victory.

The teams originally earned their spots as Africa Cup champions, but were forced to qualify again through the FIH’s official qualifying tournaments after the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee insisted on additional qualifying criteria.
  • 1 – Olympic debutant at London 2012: Belgium’s women’s team.
