Hockey Social: ‘Why is a girl playing with the boys?’

The Hockey Paper‘s scroll through the weekend in hockey in five tweets

Girl Power

This tweet stuck out the most at Hockey Paper Towers, not least for her daughter’s riposte on the pitch – player of the match no less – after a quite needless sideline comment. We’re guessing that some just don’t like girls mixing it with the boys in case they get showed up. And that clearly includes elders watching on.

In it for the long run

It was in the late 70s that Georgina Headley played her first weekend hockey with Yateley HC. This weekend, she played with the next generation. Chapeau!

The hockey mojo’s back

We loved this tweet from Nici Gelder, who said it was a “fabulous feeling” to be back playing after an ankle break in March, and even recalling the time.

No love lost

Sounded spicy at Sugden Road … from Colin Pike’s match report as Surbiton took on Wimbledon in a typically frenetic London derby:

Jonny Gall and Wimbledon’s Ed Horler both spent five minutes on the naughty step after a clash on the pitch. In the second half, Gall was shown a second yellow in the 49th minute, five minutes after Wimbledon’s Michael Hoare suffered the same fate.

Green with envy

The accolades continue for Lena Tice. The Ireland defender has been playing for Harbour Hawks in the New Zealand Hockey League and finished the weekend as champions. She’ll now ply her trade back with UCD this season.

Argentina easy on (rib) eye

Across the Tasman Sea, Argentina took away the Darwin Open title. Check out the trophy, which for one moment looked suspiciously like a massive slab of steak.
