New FIH president open on Champions Trophy hockey format

New FIH president Tayyab Ikram has hinted that he would be open for a return to a Champions Trophy-style format but said that the Pro League was still in its infancy and needed time to develop.

Ikram, Pakistani born but now a Macau citizen, replaced Narinder Batra in the FIH hotseat following a majority Congress vote on Saturday.

“I’m not here to defend 100 per cent what we are doing… we have to explore the full potential of Pro League,” he told reporters.

  1. The champions trophy instead of pro league will substantially cut costs. It will also bring media attention since a tournament format is more eye catching than a couple of matches in a long schedule.

    The next 2 years may be perhaps the most important in hockey history. There is the Hockey5s World Cup, the need to cut water based pitches and transition totally to dry pitches by Olympics 2028 and now the rebirth of the champions trophy.

  2. He cannot be a Macau citizen, it is not a country. He may have permanent residence in Macau, but that’s a different matter.
