Hockey is the ‘crown jewels’ of East Grinstead, they have The Faithful – now for the fans

The Hockey Paper speaks to the founders of Premier Division club’s terrace-style club of fans who hope to change face of supporting club hockey

No sooner had they lit the first blue and white flare of the new season, than the opposition had taken an early lead within seconds. No matter to the self-billed EG Faithful, a hardy band who hope to entice other clubs in starting their own all-chanting, all drumming sections to lift club hockey.

EG Faithful are the current standard bearers in English hockey – a motley crew of East Grinstead fans who stand by the temporary bar and DJ unit on match days and offer some hockey banter and some boisterous chants. Two of the founders, Mike Lewis and Laurence Richards, say that their biggest fan is George Pinner. “He thanked us in the bar and said we need more of it,” says Lewis.

There is also clearly an appetite for what the Faithful are doing at Saint Hill. After setting up a crowdfunder, they have amassed around £700, which, says Lewis, has so far allowed them to purchase two terrace-style club flags.
