A British coach has been tasked with overseeing the Ghana men’s and women’s teams at the Commonwealth Games.

Ali Ghanzafar was appointed in April and will lead both teams in a busy schedule for the Manchester-based coach.

Ghanzafar competed for Pakistan in the 2004 Olympics. He is Leek Men’s first team coach and has played for Deeside Ramblers.

Having become eligible to play for England, Ghazanfar also became the first ever Pakistani athlete to be selected to represent England in the over-35s.

Vice President of Ghana Hockey, Elizabeth Safoah King, said: “We know it is going to be a tough assignment for us when we meet the best teams in the world but we are determined to prove this time that we are no pushovers, hence the introduction of the British coach.”

Ghana men will first meet England on the opening day before meeting India, Canada and Wales, while the women’s team will play India, England, Wales and Canada.

The women’s players are mainly selected from the Ghana Police Service team, with Amoako Cecilia the most experienced with 53 caps.
