Men’s Premier Division: Old Georgians edge towards first European club hockey berth

Old Georgians could secure European hockey this weekend for the first time in the club’s history. The Surrey outfit face an away trip to Hampstead & Westminster on Sunday, with a Euro Hockey League berth in the offing for next season if they can muster three points.

After a stellar season where they have only been beaten once (2-0 away to Wimbledon in late October), Old Georgians could also find themselves on the cusp of a first Men’s Premier Division title if results fall their way by Sunday evening.

Holding a 10-point lead at the top and with 15 points still available, the league Championship is tantalisingly within their grasp, while Wimbledon need to win at home against Holcombe to keep up the charge.

With Old Georgians holding such a sizable gap at the top of the league, the race is now on between Wimbledon, Surbiton, Hampstead & Westminster and Holcombe for the second European spot.

Surbiton, in third, face East Grinstead at Sugden Road. Mark Pearn’s side have prevailed twice over East Grinstead in West Sussex already this season.

University of Exeter could be relegated from the Premier Division this weekend if they fail to win. Exeter host Durham University on Sunday, a fortnight after the west country side dismantled their student rivals 9-0.

In Division 1, Reading still hold the promotion aces after back-to-back victories in their quest for Premier Division hockey next season alongside their female club counterparts.

Reading have a two-point lead over Team Bath Buccaneers, who are breathing down their rivals’ necks after a 12-match unbeaten run and overtaking Canterbury in second.
