Argentina hockey and Carlos Retegui cut ties after dual gender success

Carlos Retegui’s garlanded tenure as coach with Argentina has ended after Fernando Ferrara was revealed as the next women’s head coach.

Retegui, 51, had announced his intentions to continue at the helm following the women’s silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

But the Argentine Hockey Confederation (CAH) saw otherwise and appointed Ferrara, the three-time Olympian and former under-21 coach. She was also coach of Italy women for eight years.

Retegui, 52 next month, was placed as a technical director in 2009 before leading Las Leonas to the 2010 World Cup title and 2012 Champions Trophy success. Silver at London 2012 and World Cup bronze followed two years later.

Retegui was then installed as men’s national coach and took the team to Olympic gold.

“I thank the players, players, my loyal coaching teammates and the leaders,” he said in a statement.

“Thank you all, forever for everything, especially to the players and the leaders who trusted me, to my loyal co-workers.

“For now, rest, reflect and enjoy my time. Always think positively, and be optimistic about what is to come.”

Mariano Ronconi was also confirmed as head of the men’s national side last month.

Mariano Ronconi, a former goalkeeper, coached the side at Tokyo 2020, having taken the helm last autumn from Germán Orozco, who was fired by Argentine Hockey.
