GB and England hockey set for coverage boost with Olympic TV launch

England and Great Britain Hockey is working with over 25 national governing bodies ahead to launch a new online TV platform featuring the best of Olympic and Paralympic sports.

The new venture, in conjunction with the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations, has been in development for nearly three years and could lift hockey’s Premier Division to a new audience.

The OTT platform GB Sport Media is set to launch with rights secured to domestic and regional competitions. It is also understood that international events could also be shown with non-exclusive rights through global federations.

The online platform will also offer behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and features with Olympic sports and its stars.

“England Hockey are working with GB Sport Media to provide an exciting new future platform for both Olympic and Paralympic sports,” the national body said recently.

Dominic Coles, a former BBC and Discovery executive, was appointed last year as the chair of GB Sport Media, the organisation formed to market the rights to the OTT service.

He said: “For the first time, there will be a single destination for many of these sports between Games, giving fans the opportunity to continue to follow their heroes and rising stars as they compete for domestic and international honours.”

The announcement was originally released before the pandemic. According to the service, over 2,600 hours of content across 26 Olympic and Paralympic sports has already been secured.
