EuroHockey organisers are hoping to admit up to 2,700 fans every day for June’s Championships in Amsterdam.
However, the Championships look set to be attended by partisan Dutch fans at this stage. Strict travel rules are in place for international visitors with up to 10 days quarantine.
Tickets went on sale on Friday for the 2019 event, which will take place from June 4-13 at the Wagener Stadium.
According to organisers, spectators will be placed in households and the mandatory 1.5 metre distance between will also be taken into account throughout the venue, with ticket holders being admitted on showing a negative Covid rapid test.
Erik Gerritsen, Dutch hockey’s general director, said: “In recent months, we have discussed various scenarios with the national and local government.
“The joint authorities have now given us permission to start ticket sales. At the moment we assume that we will be able to admit a limited number of spectators every day, but who knows, maybe more will be possible at the end of May. But even with a limited number of spectators, the atmosphere in the stadium will be great.”
Organisers said that ticket holders will be given a refund if the event hits problems with the pandemic.
Angus Kirkland, director general of the European Hockey Federation (EHF), said: “We are pleased that ticket sales have started. The EHC is the pinnacle event on our calendar. It will be a Championship like no other but we are sure that we can run a safe and fun event, with spectators back in the stands where they should be.”
The successful staging of the 2017 event saw 9,500 fans attend the Championships. Holland women and Belgium men will be defending their European titles.
