Summer Vets series prizes to reflect hockey inclusion

A summer masters tournament series will offer prizes to reflect how the pandemic has shifted hockey’s stance on inclusion into the game.

The Hockey Centre Vets Summer Series will consist of Sunday League matches and Masters Summer Cup weekends over April to June, featuring some long-established masters sides based in the UK.

Simon Mason, of Mercian, said: “The last 12 months has opened peoples eyes to the barriers that exist for some communities to get involved in hockey, so the real prizes are the four full sets of junior goalkeeping foam that will be awarded to teams nominated by the competition Super Cup winners.

“The nominations will have to be teams that have faced funding issues, the players come from a diverse set of backgrounds and don’t have established revenue streams.

“The goalkeeping kit should then enable or help them to put out team(s) to develop and have fun in a safe way with the correct protective equipment.”

Mason said that representatives from both The Hockey Centre and Mercian will attend the Super Cup weekends at the end of May and June, to increase the Masters network and understand the type of sides that may be nominated.
