Fürste targeting a World Cup return

We had written off German midfielder Moritz Fürste for the 2014 World Cup, but news from Germany says he is is starting the final phase of rehabilitation for a knee injury suffered in March.

The 29-year-old former player of the year tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on March 5 while training with the German team in South Africa.

Initial assessments suggested the 2010 silver medallist had no hope of taking part in Germany’s 2014 World Cup campaign.  But Hamburger Abendblatt now reports that Fürste, after a successful power test, will resume running next week with a view to moving towards a full training load and resuming body contact.

“If everything goes smoothly, then I can make it to the World Cup,” he told the newspaper.
