Loreto and Banbridge win Ireland finals

Loreto women and Banbridge men took EYHL Champions Trophy Finals honours in Ireland at the weekend.

In the women’s final, UCD lost out to Loreto 1-0. The deadlock was broken during the third quarter. Former UCD player Rachel Kelly, came back to haunt her former team by opening the scoring for Loreto in the 37th minute from open play, the goal proving decisive.

In the men’s final, goals from Louis Rowe, Jake Rowe and Joshua Moffett gave Banbridge a 3-1 win over Lisnagarvey.

The Champions Trophy, League Trophy and Irish Senior Cup treble has suddenly become a potential target as Banbridge return to the Irish Senior Cup Final at UCD this weekend with the first two already in the trophy cabinet.

Meanwhiile, Antrim Hockey Club, into its 125th year, is hopeful of finding a solution to a player drought.

Last month the Ulster club was forced to forfeit its fixtures after being unable to field any teams.

It follows the pandemic when Antrim found it hard to field two sides to compete in the Ulster Branch tournaments this season.

The club says it has a growing under-11 and under-13 academy set up, which it hopes will bring on juniors to the senior teams.

Antrim was set to discuss its current adult team plight at a recent meeting as the committee considered its future for the long-running club.
