Hockey World Cup 2023: Malaysia coach hails British fitness guru after victory

Bhubaneswar — Speedy Tigers are living up their nickname at this World Cup, with coach Arul Anthoni praising British fitness guru Tom Drowley after Malaysia stunned New Zealand to record back-to-back wins in the sport’s showpiece for the first time. “The best thing that has happened to me is having Tom,” Anthoni admitted afterwards.

Malaysia beat New Zealand to qualify for the crossovers from Pool C after a nail-biting 3-2 victory following a late Black Sticks comeback, maintaining their fitness as they saw a late yellow.

In an ebb and flow contest – the two sides last met in a World Cup in 1975 – Malaysia were indebted to Faizal Saari, who played in the Dutch leagues with Schaerweijde Club this season, in the first quarter after an initial overrule, before Razie Rahim netted a penalty corner goal in the third quarter.
