Hockey World Cup: Smiling Ollie Payne hails ‘incredible’ England v India game

Goalkeeper Ollie Payne said he could only smile from behind his helmet during England’s thrilling 0-0 draw with hosts India on Sunday night after a memorable night of World Cup hockey.

Payne, 23, put in another world-class display with several superb boot saves after a breathless encounter which kept England top of their pool. The biggest match of the World Cup so far – with seats costing just £1 – was played out in front of a 21,800 sell out in Rourkela. 

“It was an incredible game and [the atmophere] is something I have never experienced,” Payne told The Hockey Paper, as England secured qualification to the knock-out stages.
