Commonwealth Games: The 1998 brawl that gave field hockey icy introduction

Hey Canada, This Isn’t Ice Hockey‘ screamed the front page of Malaysia’s leading national newspaper.

At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur – the first time hockey had been played at the quadrennial Games – things got more than a touch rowdy between the hosts and Canada.

In the heat of battle, an umpire’s decision led to Malaysia beating Canada 2-1 and the Red Caribou squaring up to the field official who, according to the Toronto Star, “cowered in fear”.
